Currency & Money

Currency information

Danish Krone (DKK; symbol kr) = 100 øre. Banknotes are issued in denominations of kr1,000, 500, 200, 100 and 50. Coins are available in denominations of kr20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. The 50 øre coin is still in circulation but is rarely used.

From May 2025, older banknotes and coins will cease to be legal tender. These include the 50-krone, 100-krone and 200-krone banknotes issued in 2009, and the 1-krone, 2-krone and 5-krone coins issued in 1993–2002.

Credit cards

Credit cards are widely accepted in Denmark, especially Visa and Mastercard. Contactless payments and mobile payment apps such as MobilePay are also popular, even for small purchases.

ATM

ATMs are widely available throughout the country, including in cities, towns, and airports. Most ATMs accept major international cards.

Banking hours

Mon-Fri 10:00-16:00.

Currency restriction

There are no restrictions on importing or exporting Danish or foreign currency, but amounts exceeding €10,000 (or equivalent) must be declared upon entry or exit.

Currency exchange

Currency exchange services are available at banks, exchange offices, major hotels, and airports. However, due to Denmark’s strong preference for electronic payments, travellers may find it more convenient to withdraw cash from ATMs rather than exchange large sums.

Denmark duty free

Denmark is part of the European Union. However, Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not considered part of the EU for customs purposes.

Travellers arriving from EU countries:

If you are over 17 years old and travelling from another EU country, you may bring goods for personal use without paying additional duty, provided taxes were paid in the country of purchase. However, if you exceed the following indicative limits, customs officers may question whether the goods are for personal use:
• 800 cigarettes or 400 cigarillos or 200 cigars or 1kg of smoking tobacco.
• 10 litres of spirits over 22% or 20 litres of fortified wine.
• 90 litres of wine (of which up to 60 litres may be sparkling wine).
• 110 litres of beer.

Travellers arriving from non-EU countries:

Travellers aged 17 or older may import the following goods into Denmark without paying duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos (max 3g each) or 50 cigars or 250g of smoking tobacco.
• 1 litre of spirits over 22% alcohol or 2 litres of alcohol under 22%.
• 4 litres of wine.
• 16 litres of beer.
• Other goods up to a total value of DKK 3,250 (for air/sea travellers) or DKK 2,250 (for other travellers).

Banned imports

Travellers to Denmark are prohibited from importing certain goods, including narcotics, unlicensed medicines, weapons, explosives, fireworks, and pesticides. Strict rules also apply to the import of live animals, pets, wild plants and animals, and products derived from them, which may require permits or be entirely restricted under CITES regulations. Meat, fish, and dairy products from outside the EU are generally not allowed. Additionally, there are EU-wide sanctions on goods originating from the Russian Federation, which include a ban on the import of diamonds, gold, jewellery, cigarettes, cosmetics, seafood such as caviar, spirits like vodka, as well as various clothing items, shoes, and smartwatches.

This list is not exhaustive. Travellers should consult the official customs website or contact the embassy or consulate near you for the most up-to-date information.

Banned exports

The export of illegal drugs, unlicensed firearms, explosives, and counterfeit goods from Denmark is strictly prohibited. Items protected under CITES, such as products made from endangered plants or animals (e.g. ivory, certain furs, corals), may not be exported without the required permits. Cultural artefacts and antiques may also require special authorisation. Additionally, due to EU sanctions, exporting certain high-value goods to Russia is banned.

This list is not exhaustive. Travellers should consult the official customs website or contact the embassy or consulate near you for the most up-to-date information.
